Tessel theme documentation

Tessel is a Shopify theme for brand led stores that sell a focused range of products. These docs walk you through every setting in the theme editor. If you get stuck, use the support form and we will reply within two business days.

Contents

Getting started

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes.
  2. Find Tessel in your theme library and click Customize.
  3. Start with Theme settings (the gear icon) to set your logo, fonts and colors. These apply across the whole store.
  4. Then edit the home page sections. Click any section in the left sidebar to change its content, or click Add section to add a new one.
  5. When you are happy, click Save, then publish the theme from the Themes page.

Before you edit a theme you already use, click Duplicate on the Themes page so you always have a copy to go back to.

Theme settings

Brand

  • Logo: upload any shape of logo. Wide and square logos both work. If you leave it empty, your store name is shown instead.
  • Favicon: the small icon in browser tabs. Use a square image, at least 32 x 32 px.
  • Body font and Heading font: choose from the Shopify font library. Bold and italic styles load automatically.
  • Type scale: Compact, Standard or Expressive. Expressive makes headings larger and is used by the Tessel demo.

Colors

Tessel uses four color roles instead of dozens of separate color settings. Each role has a Background and a Foreground (the text and icon color on that background).

  • Primary surface: the main page background.
  • Secondary surface: soft panels such as the footer and cart summary.
  • Inverse surface: dark bands such as the announcement bar and email signup.
  • Supporting surface: story tiles and feature panels.
  • Accent: hover states, sale badges and small highlights.

Most sections have a Color scheme setting. Pick Primary, Secondary, Inverse or Supporting and the section uses that pair. Keep enough contrast between each background and foreground so text stays readable.

Layout

  • Content width: how wide the page content can get on large screens.
  • Spacing rhythm: the space between sections.
  • Corners: square, soft or round corners on buttons and inputs.
  • Borders: quiet or defined lines.
  • Motion policy: Respect follows each shopper's reduced motion setting. None turns off all animation.

Product cards

  • Image ratio: Portrait, Square or Natural. Applies to product cards across the store.
  • Show second image on hover: swaps to the product's second image when a shopper points at the card.
  • Show quick add: adds an Add to cart button on each card. Products with one option, like size, show each size as a button. Products with more options link to the product page.
  • Show vendor and Show product rating: ratings come from your reviews app.

Cart

  • Cart type: Drawer opens a slide out cart when shoppers add a product. Page sends them to the cart page.
  • Free shipping threshold: enter an amount in your store currency to show a progress bar in the cart drawer. Leave it empty to hide the bar. Set up the matching free shipping rate in Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
  • Cart recommendations: pick a collection. Up to three products from it that are not already in the cart are suggested in the drawer.
  • Enable order notes: lets shoppers add a note from the drawer.

Social media

Add links to your Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and X profiles. Icons appear in the footer only for the links you fill in.

  • Header: choose your Menu (Online Store, then Navigation in your admin). Set the Logo position to Left or Center and adjust the Logo width. Turn on Sticky header to keep it visible while scrolling. The search icon opens a search bar with suggestions, and the bag icon opens the cart drawer.
  • Dropdowns and mega menu: menu items with children open a dropdown. When a top level item has three levels, it opens a full width mega menu with a column for each child. If that top level item links to a collection, its image is shown in the mega menu. On phones the menu opens as a side panel.
  • Announcement bar: a short message with an optional link. Leave the text empty to hide it.
  • Footer: built from blocks. Add a Brand block (logo, text and social icons), up to four Menu blocks, a Text block and an Email signup block, and reorder them. Section settings control the payment icons, the country and language selectors and the color scheme.
  • Email popup: add it to the footer area to ask new visitors to join your list. Choose how many seconds to wait, how many days before it shows again to the same visitor, an image and your text. Shoppers can close it at any time, and it never shows in the theme editor unless you select it.

Sections

All sections below can be added to any page that supports sections. Click Add section in the theme editor and pick one.

Slideshow

Full width images with a heading, text and button on each Slide (up to five). Choose the Height, an Image overlay to help text stand out and the Content position and Text color for each slide. Change slides every sets autoplay; set it to 0 to turn it off. Shoppers can always pause, swipe or use the arrows. On phones choose Text on image or Text below image.

Scrolling text

A moving strip of short messages, such as shipping offers or brand values. Add an Item block for each message, with an optional link. Choose the Text size, Speed and Separator icon. It stops moving for shoppers who prefer reduced motion and pauses when hovered.

Featured collections

Show products from up to five collections, each as a Tab. Shoppers switch tabs without leaving the page. Choose Carousel or Grid, how many products to show and how many columns to use on desktop.

Icons with text

Up to six Item blocks with an icon, heading and short text. Good for benefits like free shipping, returns or how your products are made. Choose Plain, Cards or Divided.

Before and after

Two images that shoppers compare by dragging a slider. Add a Before image, an After image and a label for each. Only show comparisons you can stand behind.

Customer reviews

A carousel of up to twelve Review blocks with a star rating, title, quote, author and an optional product. Only use real reviews from real customers. The optional Summary line is a good place for your average rating from your reviews app.

Blog posts

Shows the latest posts from the Blog you choose, with images, dates and an optional excerpt.

Living canvas

Tessel's signature hero. One section, three layouts. Change the Layout at any time and your content stays in place.

  • Monument: a large headline beside your image, with an optional live product and proof points below.
  • Edge crop: your image with an angled cut corner and numbered image details shoppers can open.
  • Quiet frame: one product up front with its real price and an Add to cart button. Leave the heading empty to show the product title.

Settings: Eyebrow, Heading, Text, Button label, Button link, Image, Mobile image, Product, Color scheme and Density. The Mobile image is optional and replaces the main image on phones.

Blocks:

  • Proof point (up to 3): a Value and a Label, with an optional Source and Source link. Only add numbers you can back up.
  • Image detail (up to 4, Edge crop only): a Label, Text, optional Product and a Position on image. On phones the details show as a numbered list under the image.

Guided set

Walk shoppers through a routine, a look or a set in two to five steps. Each Step has a Label, Text and a Product. Shoppers tick the steps they want and add them to the cart together. The total shown is the plain sum of the selected prices; Tessel never invents a bundle discount. Products with options (like sizes) link to their product page so the shopper can choose.

Commerce mosaic

A featured collection with a choice of Rhythm:

  • Even grid: a classic product grid.
  • Lead product: the first product is shown larger.
  • Story break: a story tile sits between the products.

Add up to two Story tile blocks with an Image, Heading, Text and an optional button. Set Products shown to 4, 8 or 12. Tessel adjusts the number of products so rows always stay full.

Collection list

Add a Collection block for each collection you want to show. Choose a Style: Tiles, Circles (great for shop by category) or Text on image. If a collection has no image, Tessel uses its first product image. You can also set a different image on each block.

Image with text

An image beside a heading, text and button. Choose the Layout (image first or second) and the Image shape (portrait, square or landscape).

Rich text

A heading, text and optional button for brand statements or launch notes. Set Alignment to Start or Center.

Feature facts

Up to six numbered Fact blocks, each with an optional Image, a Heading, Text and a link. Great for ingredients, materials or how something is made.

Customer quotes

Up to six Quote blocks with the Quote, Author and Context. Only use real quotes from real customers. For star ratings, install a reviews app and add its block to the product page.

Video

Upload a video or paste a YouTube or Vimeo link in External video. Videos never play automatically.

Email signup

A newsletter form. Signups are added to your customer list with the newsletter tag and appear in your admin under Customers.

Logo list

Up to eight Logo blocks for press or partners. Add an Image, a Name (used as alt text, or shown as text if there is no image) and an optional Link.

Questions

A list of expandable questions. Add a Question block for each one.

Custom Liquid and Apps

Custom Liquid lets you add your own Liquid or HTML. Apps holds blocks from apps you install. Neither is needed for the theme to work.

Product pages

Product composition

Choose how each product page is laid out with Product composition:

  • Balanced: gallery beside the purchase details. The best default for most products.
  • Compact: a wide gallery with a purchase band underneath. Good for products with many photos.
  • Editorial: a large lead image with your story beside the purchase details.

To use a different composition for some products, create a new product template in the theme editor, set its composition and assign it to those products in your admin.

Gallery

Product media shows in a swipeable gallery. Choose the Gallery layout: thumbnails below, thumbnails on the side or a grid. Turn on Enable image zoom to let shoppers open images full screen. When a shopper picks a variant with its own image, the gallery jumps to it. Turn on Show sticky add to cart bar to keep an Add to cart button at the bottom of the screen once shoppers scroll past the main one.

Blocks

Title, Vendor, Rating, Text, Price and availability, Product options, Purchase options, Inventory status, Quantity, Buy buttons, Icons, Description, Store pickup, Collapsible tab, Share and Custom Liquid can be reordered or removed.

  • Price shows a Save badge with the percentage off when a product has a compare at price.
  • Inventory status shows In stock, or Only a few left when stock drops below the threshold you set. It uses your real inventory.
  • Icons shows up to three short promises, such as shipping, returns and secure checkout.
  • Collapsible tab shows extra details such as ingredients or how to use. Type the content, choose a page, or connect a product metafield so each product shows its own text.
  • Rating shows stars from your reviews app.

Option swatches use the colors and images you set on your product options in the admin. Choosing an option updates the page in place. Purchase options appear when a product has subscriptions from a subscription app.

Evidence blocks

Tessel can show proof next to your products in a clear, structured way:

  • Evidence note: up to three facts, results, certifications or quotes, each with an optional source.
  • Evidence pair: a before and after or a side by side comparison.
  • Process steps: up to four ordered steps, such as how to use a product.

Incomplete entries are hidden automatically, so nothing half finished reaches shoppers. Only publish claims you can support.

Recommendations

Product pages include two Product recommendations sections. Set the Recommendation type to Related products or Complementary products. Complementary products are chosen in the free Shopify Search and Discovery app. If there is nothing to show, the section hides itself.

Gift cards

Gift card products work out of the box. Turn on Enable gift recipient fields in the Buy buttons block to let shoppers send a gift card to someone else by email.

Collection pages show the collection image as a banner (turn this off with Show collection image as a banner), a product count, sorting and a Filter button that opens a filter panel. Results update as shoppers choose filters, and active filters show as removable pills. Choose 3 or 4 columns and how many products load per page. Choose which filters appear in the Shopify Search and Discovery app. Product cards show Sale and Sold out badges automatically from your product data. As shoppers type in search, suggestions appear.

Cart

By default, adding a product opens the cart drawer. Shoppers can change quantities, remove items, add a note, see their progress to free shipping and add a recommended product without leaving the page. The full cart page is still available from the drawer, with order notes, discounts, subscription details and accelerated checkout buttons such as Shop Pay. To skip the drawer, set Cart type to Page in Theme settings.

Image sizes

  • Living canvas image: 2400 x 3000 px (4:5) or larger. Add a Mobile image at 1100 x 1400 px if your main image is wide.
  • Product images: 2000 x 2500 px (4:5) to match portrait cards, or 2000 x 2000 px if you set cards to Square.
  • Slideshow: 2400 x 1350 px (16:9). Add a Mobile image at 1100 x 1400 px for phones.
  • Collection images: 1600 x 2000 px for tiles, 2400 x 1000 px for collection banners.
  • Image with text: 1500 x 1875 px for portrait.
  • Story tiles: 1600 x 1000 px.
  • Logo: up to 400 px wide, PNG or SVG with a transparent background.

To control which part of an image stays in view when it is cropped, set a focal point on the image in your admin (open the image, then choose Edit focal point).

FAQ

How do I change the fonts?

Open Theme settings, then Brand, and choose a Body font and Heading font.

How do I add a menu with dropdowns?

In your admin, go to Online Store, then Navigation. Drag menu items under another item to nest them. Tessel supports three levels.

Why is my Product recommendations section empty?

Shopify needs some time and order history to learn related products, and it leaves out sold out items. For complementary products, add them in the Search and Discovery app.

Can I show product reviews?

Yes. Install any reviews app from the Shopify App Store. Apps that save ratings in Shopify's standard product reviews metafields show stars on product cards and in the Rating block automatically. You can also add the app's own block to the product page.

How do I set up the free shipping bar?

Open Theme settings, then Cart, and enter your free shipping amount. Then create the matching free shipping rate in your admin under Settings, then Shipping and delivery.

Can I sell subscriptions?

Yes. Install a subscription app. Purchase options then appear on product pages and in the cart.

How do I change the layout of one product page only?

Create a new product template in the theme editor, choose its Product composition, then assign the template to that product in your admin.

Will the theme slow down my store?

Tessel loads very little JavaScript and loads images only when needed. Apps you install add their own weight, so remove apps you no longer use.

Does Tessel support other languages and currencies?

Yes. Tessel works with Shopify Markets and translation apps. The country and language selectors appear automatically when you sell in more than one market or language.

Support

Use our support form to report a problem or ask a question. Include your store URL (for example, your-store.myshopify.com) and a screenshot if you can. We reply within two business days and fix critical bugs as soon as we can.

Support covers the theme's own settings and features. Custom code changes are not covered. If you want to change the theme's code, duplicate your theme first, and consider hiring a Shopify Partner for larger changes.
